Alex Cudlin has again showed his fantastic 2010 form by claiming another double podium at the latest Qatar International Road Racing Championships, riding for team QERT Suzuki. Alex entered the final round of the Qatar International Road Racing Championship 2nd place in the title challenge, some 38 points behind leader and team mate Frenchman Anthony Delhalle. Alex knew coming into the weekend’s two races that to claim overall championship honours would be nearly impossible, with only 50 points up for grabs. In order for Alex to win the title, he would need his team mate to score two non finishes in the races, which was highly unlikely. Alex started the weekend fast, storming to Pole position for both races and getting the upper hand in the mental stakes leading into the two 15 laps races. Race one started furiously, with both QERT riders in an intense battle for supremecy.
Alex and Anthony quickly broke clear of the field and began a neck on neck battle for the first 10 laps, but then bad luck struck Alex. Whilst leading the race, Alex started to feel something was wrong with his Number 80 Suzuki machine. Two corners later, Alex had very big moment on the bike, when his right hand slipped off the handlebar. Alex managed to save it from crashing and ran through the gravel trap before he regained control of the bike and rejoined the race. As it turned out, Alex's right hand handle bar grip had slipped off, which was the cause of his close call. Alex then proceeded to finish the last 5 laps without the throttle grip, but still managed to secure 2nd position in the race. A marvelous effort considering his problems. However, because Alex didnt win the race and team mate Anthony Delhalle did, the Championship honours were finalised in that race and went to the Frenchman. Alex was obviously disappointed with the mechanical problem that robbed him of the race one win, but he was eager to prove his worth in race two. With the Championship over and out of the minds of both Alex and Anthony, race two was set to be a dazzler. Again, both riders quickly raced away from the rest of the field and began another intense battle. The pace the two front riders were showing was the fastest the Qatar Championship had ever seen; both riders pushing hard to the next level for the 15 lap race. As each lap passed, neither rider was giving an inch and it was an exciting battle for the spectators to experiance. With the lead changing almost every 2nd corner, all eyes were on the final lap to see who produced the goods. Alex took the lead into turn one on the last lap and ran a perfect lap with no mistakes. With Alex coming onto the straight leading and Anthony Delhalle hot on his heels, the race would come down to who slipstreamed the other rider the best. Alex managed to cross the line victorious, winning by a tiny 0.025 of a second margin and claiming the lap record. "What a weekend. It started well when I claimed pole but I knew the races would be a tough battle with my team mate. In race one We were having a great race but unfortunately, with the grip coming off, I didnt get the win. I was lucky to have saved it from crashing and still get a podium. In race two, with the championship over, I wanted to win really badly. We both pushed hard and it was the fastest 15 laps the Qatar Championship has ever seen. I was really happy to get the win and win the final race of the year. It showed that next year if I dont miss 3 races I can challenge for the number one plate. To walk away with pole, a win, a 2nd and lap record, I’m pretty proud!" said the smiling Aussie. With the 2009/2010 Qatar International Road Racing Championship coming to an end, Alex will now turn his attentions to winning the next round of the World Endurance Superstock Championships at the famous Bol Dor 24hour in France in September, where he and Team QERT currently lead the standings. |
